Team news: Pochettino won’t take risks with Spurs starsPublished November 22, 2016
Doubts surround several key Tottenham players ahead of their must-win game against Monaco, but despite the magnitude of the tie, Mauricio Pochettino is refusing to take unnecessary risks with their long-term fitness.
With two games to play, the north Londoners sit in third-place in Group E, with failure to win tonight’s match at the Stade Louis II potentially seeing them knocked out of the prestigious competition.
But with first-teamers Harry Kane (ankle), Dele Alli (knee) and Moussa Dembele (foot) all fitness doubts, Pochettino will instead prioritise managing the trio’s health.
Previewing the game in his pre-match press conference, Pochettino said: “We must win but we need to see whether players have fully recovered or not.
“We have a very good team in front of us and we have to be clever.
“Some players might need to start on the bench and then come on and make an impact.”
Pochettino: "Our selection will depend on whether players like Kane, Alli and Dembélé can play 90 mins. We don’t want to take risks." #THFC— Ben Dinnery (@BenDinnery) November 21, 2016
Table-toppers Monaco, meanwhile, need just a draw to confirm their progression through to the last 16.
Midfielder Nabil Dirar is expected to be the only profile absentee for the Monegasques as they look to do the double over Pochettino and Co.
Back in September, Tuesday’s hosts recorded a 2-1 victory over Spurs at Wembley thanks to goals from Bernardo Silva and Thomas Lemar.
