One In, Two Out: Arsenal close in on £40m signing as Man City & Chelsea chase Gunners stars
Arsenal are being encouraged to make a move for Wolfsburg star Julian Draxler with Gunners playmaker Mesut Ozil advising the North London side to make a move for his national team colleague according to the Sunday Mirror.
The 23-year-old is set to leave his Bundesliga side in January and is known to be a long-term Arsene Wenger target and speculation is rife that a January move could be on the cards.
Draxler had upset Wolfsburg with his apparent attempts to engineer a summer exit failed however he has still been a regular in first-team action with the Volkswagen Arena side hovering above the drop zone.
Though the £40m rated attacking midfielder is perhaps not the same player as the one who shone in national team duty a year or two ago he still very much a player with a great deal of natural ability.
Draxler has already amassed over 200 club appearances 27 national team caps.
Whilst Arsenal have been linked with a move to bring Draxler a similar style player, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, has been hotly linked with a surprise move to Premier League rivals Man City.
The Sun on Sunday believe Pep Guardiola is ready to launch a £25m move for the England international with the 23-year-old now entering the final 18 months of his current contract.
Whilst Arsenal have been hard at work trying to tie down Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil to new deals there are as yet no talks planned to keep hold of Oxlade-Chamberlain and this may well be the root of City’s interest in the former Southampton man.
Meanwhile Chelsea continue to track the aforementioned Sanchez with The Metro claiming the West London side are very keen on landing the Chilean international.
Sanchez is a player Wenger really can not afford to lose, the former Barcelona and Udinese man is by some distance Arsenal’s most effective attacking option, but it appears the club are not willing to meet the South American’s steep wage demands and as such it’s no surprise that the big fish would be circling.
The 27-year-old has already racked up 14 goals and eight assists in 21 starts in all competitions this term.
Arsenal currently sit in third spot in the Premier League table, nine points off leaders Chelsea.
