Jose Mourinho will return to former club Chelsea in a daring bid to lure Willian to Manchester United, according to reports.
With the winter window set to open in just over a month’s time, the Portuguese boss is already looking at where he can strengthen his misfiring squad, with a summer spending spree only serving to help the Old Trafford club to sixth place in the table.
And the Daily Star claims that one of the players being considered is Chelsea’s Willian, who has seen his game-time limited under Antonio Conte’s new regime.
The Star claims Man Utd manager Jose Mourinho is keen on Willian, who has been reduced to a substitute role under Antonio Conte— Chelsea Live (@chelsea90live) November 25, 2016
The Brazilian was a key performer for the ex-Real Madrid manager during his final season at the club, and is ideally suited to playing the type of high-energy system that Mourinho is attempting to impose upon his team.
Rated at £40 million, last season’s Chelsea Player of the Season missed out entirely on selection for the Blues’ trip to Middlesbrough last time around, and could well seek assurances over playing time with his Brazil place now also under threat.
It remains to be seen if Conte will sanction the sale of an important squad player to a direct rival, but the paper claims Mourinho is keen to get his man and may sanction a big bid for his services.
Willian has started just six of Chelsea’s 12 games so far this campaign but is still well respected within the game.
