Massive implications: Man United chase incredible £150m midfield duoPublished July 14, 2016
Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is set to continue his impressive summer transfer spree, with the Portuguese coach looking to land £150m rated midfield duo Cesc Fabregas and Paul Pogba in the coming weeks.
The speculation surrounding the future of Pogba, has been heightened in recent months, with the latest news suggesting that United are closing in on a world record deal to bring their former midfielder back to Old Trafford before the start of the new Premier League season.
If you thought that the astronomical fee that United would have to pay for the Frenchman’s services would mean the end of the club’s summer spending, then it seems like you would be wrong.
According to several sources in the British press, the Red Devils are also keeping a close eye on Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas, who Mourinho worked with at Stamford Bridge during his recent stint as Blues boss, and it is understood that a deal for the Spaniard would be irrespective of any pursuit of landing Paul Pogba from Juventus.
Whilst for the moment the signing of Paul Pogba seems a lot closer than that of Cesc Fabregas, If United were to capture both high calibre midfielders, then whilst it would be a real coup for Jose Mourinho, it would also leave the ‘Special One’ with some tactical dilemmas ahead of the new season.
If United are to line-up with the Portuguese’s favoured 4-2-3-1 formation, then that would only leave room for two central midfielders in the starting XI.
The club already boasts a number of quality centre-midfielders, which includes the likes of Michael Carrick, Ander Herrera, Marouane Fellaini, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Morgan Schneiderlin, who was a £30m purchase last season, and if need be even Wayne Rooney, who has expressed his interest in playing more centrally during the latter stages of his career.
The reported arrivals of both Pogba and Fabregas would make it near impossible for all those players to remain at the club, leaving Mourinho with the task of implementing a summer clear-out to all players he deemed surplus to requirements.
Bastian Schweinsteiger is one who would be most likely to be shown the exit door at Old Trafford, following his injury hit debut season, whilst Marouane Fellaini would most likely also depart the club.
The futures of Morgan Schneiderlin and Ander Herrera, would also be up for debate, with both players struggling at the club despite being big money purchases in the last couple of seasons.
Whilst a mass summer exodus is always a distraction for clubs, the potential reward of re-shaping your midfield to include Paul Pogba and Cesc Fabregas may be too big an offer for Jose Mourinho to refuse.
The club have already completed the signings of Eric Bailly, Zlatan Ibrahimivoc and midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan this summer, and if the Armenian ends up starting the season alongside the likes of Paul Pogba, Cesc Fabregas, and Reds starlet Anthony Martial at Old Trafford, then Untied would surely have the most unstoppable midfield in the Premier League next season.
One thing is for sure, United’s Premier League rivals will be waiting with bated breath to see if these transfer rumours are just a pipe dream, or if the Red Devils are set to return to the glory days of making Old Trafford the theatre of dreams.
