Manchester United may not be close to signing anyone for the first team this January, but they appear to have signed a talented youth player to his first professional contract. The Red Devils are yet to formally announce it, but Lukasz Bejger has been photographed penning a new contract.

United beat rivals Manchester City to the signing of Bejger in the summer, and the 17-year-old Polish defender has really impressed in his short time at Old Trafford. Under former boss Jose Mourinho, United were keen to sign another centre back.

While it remains to be seen whether they are still in that particular market as they search for a new permanent manager, it will certainly please fans and coaches alike to see Bejger developing quickly through the youth ranks.

The likes of Tahith Chong, Mason Greenwood and Angel Gomes are all progressing well, too. The tradition of a strong academy is still going strong with legendary former United striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at the helm until the end of the season.

At 190cm tall, Bejger is a towering presence at the back, and could come in handy if he continues to develop well. The news of his first professional deal are certainly vindication of the decision to steal in ahead of City for his signature.

On the pitch for the first team, things are going really well. Solskjaer became the first manager to win his first seven games in charge against Brighton on Saturday. Marcus Rashford, who is perhaps the best example of a successful academy graduate, scored for the fourth game in a row. Champions League football seemed like it was out of the question when Mourinho was sacked in December. They were 11 points off the top four, but now sit just three away.

If they can qualify for the biggest competition in Europe, it will certainly help them attract top players in the summer, as well as the man they want to replace Jose Mourinho.

But the clamour for Solskjær to get the job on a permanent basis is growing with this impressive form, especially with the last 16 tie against Paris Saint-German on the horizon.
