Manchester United Transfers: Signing this £60m Trio Could Lead Old Trafford Side Back from the BrinkPublished May 17, 2016
Manchester United have endured a hugely frustating season this term and Louis van Gaal’s future in charge of the Old Trafford side is very much in the balance.
The uncertainty over the Dutchman’s future hasn’t prevented the club from pushing to bring in big-name summer signings, with chief executive Ed Woodward said to be working on multiple deals, and with that in mind here are three targets who could help Manchester United to battle for top honours in 2016/17.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic – Free Transfer
The veteran Swedish international has bid farewell to PSG after four superb seasons at the Parc des Princes, the former Ajax, Inter Milan, Juventus, AC Milan and Barcelona man netting an incredible 154 goals in 179 appearances for the Ligue 1 side, and is now on the lookout for a new challenge.
There is much talk of a possible short-term deal with Man United being ‘in the works’ (via Daily Mail) and such a move could prove priceless. The arrival of such an esteemed performer could aid the development of young strikers Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford and Zlatan Ibrahimovic still has a season or two in the tank and has the physical presence to cause Premier League defences all sorts of problems.
Mario Gotze – Bayern Munich (£35m-£40m)
The German international looks likely to leave the Allianz Arena following the capture of Renato Sanches and a move to Old Trafford may tempt the 23-year-old (Via ESPN). The cultured midfielder would offer some much needed guile behind the club’s front-men and Gotze is a player who is looking to prove a point.
Gotze has barely played this term but is an undoubtedly talented performer who is sure to pitch up at a massive club this summer. The presence of old-timer Bastian Schweinsteiger at Manchester United could aid any move to bring in the Bundesliga star.
Raphael Varane – Real Madrid (£20m – £25m)
Whilst Manchester United have been fairly sound at the back this season there is always room for improvement and French international Varane would be a great central defensive partner for Chris Smalling.
The former Lens man has struggled to retain a foothold in the Bernabeu starting eleven and could be ready for a fresh challenge. A move for the defender may prove all the more (Via the Metro) likely if Jose Mourinho takes over at Man Utd, having signed Varane during his stint in charge at Real Madrid.
Moves to capture this trio can be offset with funds made from the sales of a number of underperforming players, with the likes of Marouane Fellaini. Memphis Depay, Adnan Januzaj and Ashley Young bring four such stars the club can afford to cash-in on.
