Manchester United are targeting a move for Dutch youngster Steven Bergwijn, according to a report in the Mirror. The Red Devils aren’t expected to be too active in the January window, but they could sense an opportunity to pounce for one of PSV Eindhoven’s best players.
Bergwijn, 20 is one of the best young talents in European football and is really part of what looks like being a great resurgence of Dutch football. Holland have failed to qualify for the last two major tournaments, but with a raft of young players coming through under Ronald Koeman’s, the future is definitely bright; the future is Orange.
United may be wary of looking at a desk for Bergwijn, given that the signing of Memphis Depay, who cost £25million from PSV in 2015, didn’t work out at all. Depay has gone to Lyon and found his best form, but his struggles at Old Trafford are a warning that potential doesn’t always come to fruition.
That said, Bergwijn has been on fire in the Eredivisie this season, scoring nine goals and creating a further seven in 16 games this season. United are on the lookout for a winger despite tying Anthony Martial down to a new deal this week, but they could wait until the summer, when a permanent manager can be found, to make any significant moves in the transfer market.
He is a player who can play on either side, so he will undoubtedly be a great signing, whether Ole Gunnar Solskjær remains in charge.
Various different reports suggest Bergwijn was being tracked by Liverpool, Tottenham and Arsenal in the summer. There are no doubts he would be a great addition to the United squad.

But with Champions League football far from guaranteed next season, he could be making a step away from the biggest competition in Europe, given PSV’s position in Holland. They currently top the table, who points above rivals Ajax.
Any deal would cost a lot for the club, but they are looking to rebuild and he is the kind of player who could lead a real revelation at United, who have not won a Premier League title in six years now.
