Manchester United Set For First Major Transfer Breakthrough Of The Summer
Manchester United could be on the verge of their first gamechanging signing of the summer. Though Swansea City winger Dan James is all but through the door at Old Trafford already, with a deal of around £15million said to be agreed, Sporting Lisbon midfielder Bruno Fernandes could be joining too, and if the Portugal international does arrive, it would be one of the biggest deals of the summer.
Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking to overhaul his squad this summer in a bid to turn them into a Champions League side again, and in the long run, Premier League title challengers. Fernandes is a central playmaker, a player who would add a great amount of creativity to the midfield. A number of other big European clubs, including United’s rivals Manchester City, are said to be keeping tabs on him, but according to reports, he could be set for a switch to Solskjaer’s side.
An agreement with the club has been reached. They are supposedly working on the last details, one aspect being the commissions. Various clubs seem interested in the player, but for now ManUtd is very close to signing him.
A number of other big European clubs, including United’s rivals Manchester City, are said to be keeping tabs on him, but according to reports, he could be set for a switch to Solskjaer’s side. It has been said he could cost around £50million. Fernandes’ international teammate Joao Felix is also said to be a target for United, and the pair of them would certainly add a lot of quality to the team.
Elsewhere, the club have made a “substantial bid” for Crystal Palace defender Aaron Wan Bissaka. The fullback has three years remaining on his contract at Selhurst Park, and the Eagles are not likely to be willing to sell him unless their valuation is met. That is expected to be around £50million, too, which could complicate matters.
Another top young British talent, Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff, has already distanced himself from a move after signing a new contract at St James’ Park. He enjoyed a superb breakthrough campaign under Rafa Benitez, though he is now recovering from a serious knee injury.
It had been said Solskjaer was keen on signing British players, such as Wan Bissaka, James and Longstaff, but by targeting Fernandes, it appears he is keen on a balance. Creativity will be crucial for United next season, and that is why Juan Mata has a new contract offered to him. If he signs it, he will remain at the club, otherwise he will leave on a free transfer.
But the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez are likely to be sold this summer, which could give Solskjaer even more power in the transfer window this summer.
