The 31-year-old England international broke the Old Trafford side’s long standing goal-scoring record when he netted a superb free-kick against Stoke City, overhauling Sir Bobby Charlton’s 249 goal total, but has been something of a bit-part player under Jose Mourinho.
The Sunday Mirror claims Mourinho has given his blessing to Rooney’s exit and a move could happen as early as next month, a move that could net the experienced forward a deal worth nearly £1m a month, which would make the Man United man the highest paid player in world football.
Rooney has enjoyed 14 years at Manchester United but seemingly Mourinho is ready to call-time on his tenure at the Premier League club as a number of Chinese Super League clubs prepare offers.
A number of high-profile players have completed moves to China in recent months with the likes of Oscar, Carlos Tevez and Axel Witsel securing massive salary hikes as a result of their switches to the far-east.
The arrival of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan have left Rooney out in the cold, leaving the attacker to make just eight Premier League starts this season, and if the club skipper feels he has no future under Mourinho then a move away seems entirely plausible.
