Manchester United open talks to sign Euro 2016 star in £8m deal as Jose Mourinho looks to beef up defencePublished August 15, 2016
Jose Mourinho saw his Manchester United side ease past AFC Bournemouth in his first game in charge of the Old Trafford outfit and is seemingly not entirely happy with how his back-line coped with the Cherries.
ESPN report that Mourinho is now keen on Southampton centre-back Jose Fonte with Manchester United locked in informal talks to sign the Portuguese international.
32-year-old Fonte may well jump at the move to Manchester United even though it could mean a less prominent role than he enjoys at St Mary’s.
The experienced defender is at the stage in his career when he can not afford to pass up such a high-profile switch even though he is likely to be behind the likes of Chris Smalling, Eric Bailly, and perhaps even Daley Blind, in Mourinho’s pecking order.
Fonte moved to the South-Coast club from Crystal Palace back in 2010 and has helped the club build from League One up to the upper echelons of the Premier League, making 267 appearances.
He formed a crucial part of Portugal’s triumphant Euro 2016 squad, starting in all his nation’s knockout stage clashes.
This source claims such a move would set back Mourinho a very affordable £8m.
