Manchester United could lose their best young player to BarcelonaPublished October 19, 2016
Jose Mourinho won’t be pleased to read the Daily Mail‘s latest report about the future of Angel Gomes. Tipped as one of the brightest prospects in English football, Manchester United could be at risk of losing the playmaker. Barcelona are sniffing around the 16-year-old after the teenage prodigy’s headline-making feats this season. While he’s been touted as a future star for several years now, United mightn’t get the chance to see him in their first team. The idea of playing with Messi and Neymar might be too hard to resist.
The fact that Barcelona staff have been monitoring his development will worry United – even if a formal offer hasn’t been made yet. Gomes was signed by United as a 13-year-old and his talent has been clear from day one. As such, he’s been consistently playing in higher age groups since joining. Even better, he’s excelled every time.
The teenager has football in his blood. His father Gil played with Luis Figo and Manuel Rui Costa for Portugal U21s and his cousin is former United winger Nani.
Gomes made his United under 18 debut at the age of 14 and made the news when he scored a hat-trick for them aged 15. Since then, he’s captained England U17s. If United don’t secure his future then they could have another Paul Pogba case on their hands. Watch this space.
