Manchester United line-up £30m bid for fifth summer signing with Juan Mata sale to fund offerPublished August 14, 2016
Jose Mourinho may have spent over £150m on new signings this summer but it appears he isn’t quite finished yet.
Spanish source AS claim that the Old Trafford boss is eyeing up his former Bernabeu charge Raphael Varane as he continues his push to strengthen his defence.
Mourinho has already brought in Eric Bailly from Villarreal but may feel further additions are needed.
Varane was brought from Lens to the Spanish capital by Mourinho back in 2011 and impressed in his opening two seasons at the club.
However recent Real Madrid managers have opted to stick with the tried and tested centre-back pairing of Pepe and Sergio Ramos leading to Varane warming the bench for long periods.
Therefore Varane may be tempted by a fresh challenge though AS‘s valuation of £30m may be a little low in today’s inflated transfer market.
Having spent such a massive sum Mourinho will be told to offload a few players to help balance the books with young pair Paddy McNair and Donald Love banking the club around £5.5m.
Juan Mata is likely to leave with Mourinho seemingly not being keen on holding onto the Spaniard, having sold the player during their shared time at Chelsea.
Mourinho opted to sub Mata during the Community Shield clash with Leicester City last weekend, the 28-year-old having himself come on as sub, and Everton are one side known to be keen on the cultured midfielder.
