Manchester United identify Tottenham star & £85m forward as top summer transfer targets
Manchester United have been linked with a summer swoop for Tottenham defender Danny Rose as well as Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann.
According to the Manchester Evening News, United boss Jose Mourinho is looking to swap fullback Luke Shaw for his England teammate after the former Southampton man fell out of favour with the Portuguese coach.

Rose, 26, has developed into one of Europe’s best defenders under Mauricio Pochettino at White Hart Lane, playing a key role in their run towards the Premier League title last season. Eventually, they finished third behind champions Leicester City and local rivals Arsenal.
There has been talk of a £42million bid, but the local media in Manchester claim Mourinho senses an opportunity to part ways with Shaw, who he believes has failed to progress with his coaching. Shaw, much like Rose, became highly rated thanks to a spell under Pochettino and as the Argentine departed for Spurs, the defender became the world’s most expensive teenager at the time when he moved to Old Trafford.
The Red Devils are still looking for the formula which will see them challenge for the Premier League title, which they have not done since Sir Alex Ferguson retired as champion in 2013. The summer signings of Eric Bailly, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and world-record transfer Paul Pogba prove their ambition, but they are still struggling to qualify for the Champions League, let alone make a genuine bid for the title.
Spurs are unlikely to want to sell one of their academy products, but Pochettino could be keen to reunite with Shaw and, from his point of view, it could be the perfect move to resurrect his career.
United’s other target is much more well documented. They have been linked with Griezmann for a long time now and Mourinho is known to be a big fan. The Frenchman has developed into a world class player in his time at Atletico Madrid, helping them to the Champions League final last season before inspiring France to the final of Euro 2016 a couple of months later.
The 25-year-old then finished third behind Lionel Messi and eventual winner Cristiano Ronaldo in the FIFA Best Player award. Griezmann has been quoted in the past admitting he would like to play with Paul Pogba, a France teammate, at club level and regularly asks him about life in the Premier League, per Sky.
With an £85million buyout clause in his Atleti contract, which runs until 2021, there is a way for United to clinch this deal, leaving the LaLiga outfit powerless. But Sky also reported yesterday that club president Enrique Cerezo said he was confident Griezmann would not move to the Premier League.
Despite sitting sixth in the league and way off the pace set by Mourinho’s former club Chelsea at the top, United are on good form and are showing promise for future. They’ve only lost once in 20 games, but have drawn seven times in that time.
