Manchester United 'Expected' To Sign Young Ajax Star This Summer

Manchester United have been heavily linked with a number of big name players this summer, but manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to sign younger players in his first full season in charge. Ajax striker Dillon Hoogewerf looks set to join the Red Devils after seemingly deciding against signing a professional contract with the Dutch champions.

It is set to be a huge few months for United, who are looking to rebuild after a disastrous season in the Premier League, which saw them miss out on Champions League qualification. The overhaul in Solskjaer’s plans are set to run from the first team, with Swansea City winger Daniel James reportedly set to join the club in the coming weeks for a few of £15million, all the way to the youth set up.

As part of the shake up, reserve team manager Ricky Sbragia has already departed and it has been suggested that former midfielder Nicky Butt, a teammate of the current boss, will take a greater role overseeing development squads in the future.

Hoogewerf, 16, has been on fire for Ajax under 17s this season, netting 10 goals and registering six assists. He has also featured for the under 19s and appeared in the UEFA Youth League. His club have huge faith in him and would like to see him stay and grow into a first team player of the future, but he now looks set to leave. Head of Youth Education at Ajax, Said Ouaali, confirmed Hoogewerf is set to depart for a “foreign adventure.

“Dillon has indicated last week that he will leave the club, he said.. He is leaving for a foreign club. We wish him a lot of success and know that we have done everything to keep him. He may ultimately make the choice and choose a foreign adventure.”

While Hoogewerf is not the Ajax player United were hoping to sign, he could be a huge addition to the academy set up at Carrington, with the hope he could follow the likes of Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard into the first team. But it is the links with Ajax captain Mattijs De Ligt that had fans excited, and now that deal looks tough to do with Barcelona circling.
