Manchester City Mercilessly Trolled By Fans After Dubbing Frank Lampard A ‘Legend’

Four years ago today, Frank Lampard played his final game in English football, but while he spent over a decade at Chelsea, winning plenty of titles and becoming their all time top scorer, he bowed out after a short loan spell at Premier League rivals Manchester City. Their Twitter team have been trolled for calling him a club legend as he marked his last appearance with a goal against Southampton.

Judging by some replies to the tweet, though, there is a possibility it was designed to goad Chelsea fans. Lampard himself says he relates more to his time with the Blues, which is understandable given the success he had at Stamford Bridge.

To this day he is loved by the Blues, having scored 211 goals for the club from midfield. He also helped them win three Premier League titles, three FA Cups and two League Cups before agreeing to head to Major League Soccer side New York City, the sister club of Manchester City, who he subsequently joined on loan during the American off season.

His best moment in a City shirt came against his former club, when he scored the equaliser at the Etihad Stadium. Jose Mourinho’s side went on to win another league crown that season, while Lampard had to watch on from the sidelines, playing a supporting role in a difficult season for Manuel Pellegrini’s men.

Some have reacted to the tweet by laughing at City, while others seemed to claim it was a joke by the club’s account. Either way, it does sound a little far-fetched to call him a legend of that club, given his love affair with Chelsea.

Nowadays, Lampard is looking for a return to the Premier League as a manager with Derby County, who he is preparing to lead out against Aston Villa in the Championship playoff final on Monday afternoon.

Unsurprisingly, he has been linked with the Chelsea job as Maurizio Sarri is said to be on the brink of the sack despite finishing third and reaching the Europa League final.
