Jose Mourinho is expected to spend big this summer, as he looks to establish United as an English and European football powerhouse once again. A return to the club for Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo, eight years after he left for Spain, has even been mooted, but Mourinho is looking to his former club.

Nemanja Matic

Nemanja Matic was signed by the Portuguese during his second spell at Chelsea, in January 2014, exactly three years after he was sold to Benfica as part of the deal to bring David Luiz to England. The Serb had been transformed from a lanky winger into a world class midfield enforcer in Portugal, and upon his return has helped the Blues to two Premier League titles, under Mourinho and current boss Antonio Conte.

According to The Sun, Matic is a wanted man at Old Trafford, as Mourinho looks to shore up in that area and allow Paul Pogba the freedom to attack from deep. It is likely he would cost more than the £21million Chelsea paid Benfica for him second time around, but as already mentioned, United are planning to spend big in the summer market to improve on their sixth placed finish last term and challenge the Blues for their title.

Everton striker Romelu Lukaku, who also worked with Mourinho during a spell at Chelsea, albeit briefly before being loaned out and then sold to the Toffees in 2013 and 2014. The 24-year-old has informed the Merseyside club he will not sign a new contract and wants to leave. He has also stated he knows where he will be next season, with Chelsea favourites to sign him, but the Mirror says Mourinho wants to ensure a reunion by stealing in at the last minute.

United and Chelsea are also said to be battling it out for Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata, who is keen to play more first team football next season, and as of Wednesday, Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski, who is reportedly unhappy with his treatment in Bavaria. Either way, it looks like the battle between the clubs has begun without a ball being kicked.
