Man United move for £80m Goal-Machine will lead to Arsenal losing their star player in massive transfer coupPublished January 09, 2017
Manchester United’s pursuit of Antoine Griezmann could spark a transfer merry-go-round that will result in Arsenal losing talisman Alexis Sanchez to Atletico Madrid, according to reports in Spain.
William Hill Exclusive Offer:
Frenchman Griezmann is believed to be a key summer target for United, who want to add an element of youth to an ageing forward line containing veterans Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Wayne Rooney. A close season bid in the region of £80 million has been mooted for the diminutive attacker, which could have devastating consequences for Premier League rivals Arsenal.
Spanish publication Don Balon claims that should Atletico lose Griezmann to the Red Devils, the Rojiblancos will attempt to snare long-standing target Alexis Sanchez as his replacement.
The versatile Chilean forward has enjoyed a stunning campaign to date, mustering 15 goals and 10 assists in 26 games for Arsene Wenger’s men but now has less than 18 months to run on his contract at the Emirates Stadium.
Exit rumours have been stoked by the current impasse between Sanchez and the north Londoners over a new, improved deal, with the former Barcelona star purportedly demanding a figure of around £250,000 per week in order to commit his future to the club.
It remains to be seen if Arsenal are indeed able to match this sum, however, following the rejection of an initial offer believed to be close to £170,000 a week, the present gulf in valuations between the two parties has resulted in a stand-off.
If no deal is forthcoming, in the near-future, Arsenal may be forced to cut their losses on the player over the next six months, otherwise they risk losing a key asset for free in the summer of 2018.
The uncertainty over Sanchez’s future has put a number of clubs across Europe on red-alert, with Diego Simeone’s Atleti joining the likes of Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City in showing an interest in the explosive attacker.
And it may well be the case that any Griezmann departure from the Estadio Vicente Calderon could result in a firm bid being placed for Sanchez by the La Liga giants.
