In fact, it is Paris Saint Germain who have now entered the race to sign David De Gea as they look for a world-class goalkeeper to match their extremely talented and extremely expensive squad.

The French giants added to their squad immensely in the summer transfer window by pulling off the two biggest transfers in footballing history in Neymar Jr and Kylian Mbappe, though the latter is on a loan deal until next season.

Not only that, an attack already consisting of Edinson Cavani and a midfield containing Marco Verratti and Adrien Rabiot is something which is capable of picking apart any team in world football on their day.

Though, it is their goalkeeping spot where they are not to possess a truly world-class player, with current shot-stopper’s Alphonse Areola and Kevin Trapp still learning their trade at the tender ages of 24 and 27.

Though David De Gea is actually one year younger than Trapp at 26, he has come of age much quicker than many in football have and has become one of the best goalkeepers in world football at such a young age.

Real Madrid have had a long-standing interest in the Spanish star but have so far been unable to complete a deal for the player after several failed moves.

One of those moves was just seconds from competition as one small document was not processed in time to enable a move from Old Trafford to the Bernabeu with Keylor Navas going the other way.

Now, with Real Madrid still likely looking to sign the player, another contender has entered the ring and Manchester United may well struggle to keep arguably their best player from the hands of the two clubs.
