Liverpool and Manchester United go head-to-head for LaLiga defender
According to reports in AS, Liverpool and Manchester United are set to battle it out to sign Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez this summer, via Sky.
The 22-year-old has fallen down the defensive pecking order at the Vicente Calderon and may have to leave to secure more regular first team action, but it is unlikely Diego Simeone will want to part with one of the best young players in his squad.
Jose Mourinho is known to be a huge fan of the Uruguayan, who has a €45million buyout clause in his contract.
The Portuguese coach is intent on reshaping his squad further in the summer, ahead of his second campaign in charge at Old Trafford.
But Gimenez is likely to want to stay in the Champions League, having reached two finals in three years at Atleti, meaning he could favour a move to Anfield, with Jurgen Klopp’s Reds well in the race for a place in the Premier League’s top four.

United sit fifth and may see winning the Europa League as their best bet to qualify, but the lack of Champions League football did not stop them signing stars like Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic last season.
