It was certainly a tough night for the on looking Argentina captain Lionel Messi on Tuesday night, as he was powerless to stop Spain running out 6-1 winners in a friendly in Madrid.
Real Madrid star Isco netted a hat-trick, while Diego Costa, Thiago Alcantara and former Liverpool striker Iago Aspas added to Messi’s pain. The Barcelona man wasn’t involved but couldn’t watch it all from the stands and was seen turning away.
Jorge Sampaoli was without a number of star men, including Messi, but that result will worry him with just months to go until their World Cup campaign starts in Russia.
Messi, though, took it upon himself to lift spirits after a pretty demoralising evening. He is reported to have said: “We come through this together. United.”
The players are said to have reacted well, and it will be interesting to see how they get on this summer.
