Koeman confirms Everton interest Premier League centre-back as Toffees boss outlines transfer strategy ahead of deadline dayPublished January 30, 2017
Ronald Koeman has confirmed Everton’s interest in Burnley defender Michael Keane ahead of Tuesday evening’s transfer deadline.
The Blues have already signed Morgan Schneiderlin and Ademola Lookman for fees of £24m and £10m respectively so far this window, but are still on the lookout for further additions to strengthen their squad.
And speaking on Monday afternoon ahead of the midweek trip to face Stoke City, Koeman admitted that former Manchester United centre-back Keane was a key target as he looks for extra bodies in defence for his favoured 3-5-2 system.
“He (Keane) is one on that list of defenders in that position. But I’ve heard he’s on more lists of different teams,” he said.
There have also been calls for a new striker to be brought in to provide cover for top scorer Romelu Lukaku from the Goodison Park faithful.
A move for Standard Liege forward Ishak Belfodil collapsed after concerns about the Algerian’s temperament were raised, but at the present time, the Dutchman seems unlikely to add to his options in that particular position- with Enner Valencia set to continue as backup to the burly Belgian.
“We have Enner Valencia as a back-up in that position and that’s enough.
“We know what we want. If we don’t get the players that we want, we don’t sign players to get numbers in the squad.
“If we sign a player, it’s really that player who brings what we don’t have and who brings a lots of qualities to the team.
“If it’s not possible today or tomorrow, we will wait until the summer- and that’s easier than in January.”
Meanwhile, Everton pair Bryan Oviedo and Darron Gibson are currently on Wearside as they undergo medicals ahead of permanent moves to Sunderland.
On-loan Toffees defender Brendan Galloway will not be recalled as cover for Leighton Baines despite Oviedo’s expected departure.
