Jurgen Klopp continues summer spending as Liverpool close in on £30m double transfer swoop

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is ready to continue his summer spending spree at Anfield, with the club reportedly closing in on a double transfer swoop in the coming weeks.

After completing the signings of Joel Matip, Loris Karius and Sadio Mane already this summer, Jurgen Klopp has been busy identifying other key areas to improve in his squad during his first pre-season at the club.

Defensive reinforcements are a must on Merseyside, after the departures of Martin Skrtel and Kolo Toure, leaving only Dejan Lovren, Mamadou Sakho and the incoming Matip as the only recognised central defenders at the cub.

The defensive shortage at Anfield has led to Liverpool stepping up their interest in Estonian captain Ragnar Klavan.

Giorgino Wijnaldum

The Augsburg centre-half played both legs of the Bundesliga club’s Europa League tie with Liverpool earlier this season, and it is reported that the 30-year-old would cost in the region of £4m.

Whilst the signing of Klavan makes a lot of sense, the latest transfer story coming out of Anfield is a real head-scratcher.

According to widespread reports, the club have emerged as the favourites to sign Newcastle midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum .

The Dutch midfielder has attracted interest from many Premier League clubs, including Merseyside rivals Everton, and it is understood that Newcastle would want at least £25m for the midfielder.

Whilst there is no doubting that Wijnaldum is Premier League quality, the Reds currently boast an abundance of talent in the attacking midfield department.

Adam Lallana, Roberto Firminho, Phillipe Coutinho, and new signing Sadio Mane can all play as attacking midfielders, and if Liverpool really are the favourites to sign the Newcastle attacker, then Reds boss Jurgen Klopp would have a big tactical dilemma on his hands.

4-1-4-1 anyone?
