Jurgen Klopp compares Joel Matip dispute with Cameroon to Brexit [Video]

Liverpool have chosen not to include defender Joel Matip for Wednesday’s FA Cup third round replay at Plymouth as the row over his eligibility continues.

In Jurgen Klopp’s pre-match press conference, the German likened Matip’s situation to Brexit.

Matip rejected a call-up to the Cameroon side and has since found himself unable to play for Liverpool.

Earlier this week FIFA stated that under their regulations, Liverpool could face disciplinary action if Matip plays without Cameroon’s permission during the Africa Cup of Nations.

Klopp said: “If you don’t want to play for the national team it should be possible.”

But would the German have a similar laid back attitude if one of his first team players did not want to play for Liverpool?

Some reports now claim Matip‘s current eligibility dispute may be due to the centre-back not officially writing a letter of his retirement to the Cameroon FA in 2015.

What a schoolboy error if there’s any truth in that.
