After poaching Nemanja Matic from former club Chelsea in the summer, Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho in plotting to move for another of his old guard in the form of Cesc Fabregas.

After spending years as his direct rival when the player was at Arsenal and then Barcelona, Mourinho signed Fabregas for around £35million from the Catalan club to help him win the Premier League title in his second spell at Stamford Bridge.

The Spaniard became an assist machine, laying on 18 goals for his teammates as the Blues romped to a fourth title and first for five years. After a tough spell following his dream move back to the Blaugrana, Mourinho helped Fabregas find his best form again.

But a disastrous start to the following campaign saw Chelsea in 16th place in December 2015; Mourinho was sacked and six months later Antonio Conte arrived. Despite winning another title in his debut campaign, Conte used Fabregas sparingly and there was speculation that he would be sold by the Italian.

Their relationship may have been mended to a degree, but Mourinho remains a huge admirer of Fabregas, as he did Matic, and according to The Times is willing to sign him for United. The Red Devils are currently short on numbers in midfield, with record signing Paul Pogba suffering from a mysteriously serious hamstring problem and Marouane Fellaini also sidelined. Goals have dried up in recent games, showing just how much Mourinho could do with the kind of creative spark Fabregas would obviously provide.

It would not be the first time United have chased the former Arsenal captain. He was David Moyes’ prime target in his first season at Old Trafford in 2013, a year before he did eventually return to England under Mourinho. Chelsea may have been interested in selling him at one stage, but not now. In fact, they are reportedly keen to offer him a new contract in order to keep him here for the remainder of his best years.

To make things extra interesting, Manchester United travel to face Chelsea, and Fabregas, at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. Victory for the visitors could prove a knockout blow for Chelsea’s title hopes, even at this early stage.
