Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has denied there is no rift with Paul Pogba despite stripping him of the vice-captaincy before their Carabao Cup exit against Derby County on Tuesday.
Frank Lampard, Mourinho’s former player at Chelsea, masterminded a penalty shootout victory after a 2-2 draw at Old Trafford.
But Mourinho was fielding questions about Pogba, after reports of their relationship deteriorating after the decision to strip him of the responsibility.
“The only truth is that I made the decision of Paul not to be the second captain anymore,” he told Sky Sports.
“But no fall-out. No problems at all. The same person that decides Paul is not second captain anymore was exactly the same person that decides that Paul was the second captain, myself.
“I am the manager, I can make these decisions, no fall out at all, no problems at all. Just one decision that I don’t have to explain.”
It is believed that comments made by Pogba after recent poor results may be behind the decision, and footage of training on Wednesday does little to decrease the speculation.
