How Fourth Place May Not Guarantee Champions League Football Next Season

The race for the Premier League’s top four and Champions League qualification has been intriguing all season, but there is a slight possibility that, if Liverpool finish fifth, fourth place will not book a place in the competition next season.

Jurgen Klopp’s men are currently third but, having drawn their last two games, they can still be caught by Tottenham, who have two games in hand of them. Chelsea have a slim chance of making the top four, too.

Fourth place is now an automatic qualification spot for the group stages, but it may not be if Liverpool go on to win this year’s competition and finish fifth.

They are in the semi finals right now and hold a 5-2 lead over Roma, but they will have to face either Real Madrid or Bayern Munich in the final if they make it.

There is also the side note of Arsenal’s hopes of winning the Europa League, which would also see them reach the Champions League despite finishing sixth in the league, meaning England’s maximum of five spots would be taken up.

If all that happens, either Tottenham or Chelsea could be disappointed in their hunt for Champions League football.
