Goalkeeper top priority for Guardiola as Manchester City boss targets five other signings in major summer overhaulPublished January 17, 2017
Pep Guardiola has made the summer addition of a new goalkeeper a priority as he aims to overhaul his faltering Manchester City squad.
After a bright start to the 2016/17 season that saw the Etihad Stadium outfit roar into first-place in the Premier League table, the Citizens’ weaknesses have been exposed during a poor run of form in recent weeks, with Sunday’s 4-0 defeat against Everton the nadir of a disappointing campaign up to now.
And according to the Daily Mail, the negative displays on the pitch, coupled with the need to reduce the average age of the City squad, have led the ex-Bayern Munich coach to plot a mega-money summer raid on the transfer market.
The report claims that no less than six signings will be targeted by Guardiola during the close season, with the acquisition of a competent goalkeeper at the forefront of his thinking. Claudio Bravo has experienced a difficult transition to English football, while former No.1 Joe Hart is currently out on loan at Torino and not deemed to be part of the Catalan’s thinking.
Barcelona’s Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Benfica’s Ederson and Sunderland’s Jordan Pickford have all been scouted by City representatives in recent weeks with a view to potential summer bids, although it remains to be seen if the Blaugrana would part with their current first-choice keeper.
Pep will also seek to add fresh legs to an ageing back-line and is keen to bring in a new centre-back, right-back and left-back to shake up his defence. Virgil Van Dijk and Aymeric Laporte have been mooted as potential targets, while Tottenham pair Kyle Walker and Danny Rose are also believed to be on his radar.
A new striker and midfielder complete the City boss’ wishlist, as he searches for a long-term Yaya Toure replacement and a mobile striker to put pressure on Sergio Aguero.
Following the humiliating defeat at Goodison Park last weekend, the nouveau riche north-west club sit in fifth-place in the table, 10 points behind leaders Chelsea.
