Star striker commits future to BarcelonaPublished December 15, 2016
Barcelona have been boosted by the news that Luis Suarez has signed a new, long-term deal to keep him at the club until 2021 at the earliest.
A key asset as part of the club’s hugely productive MSN trident, the former Liverpool man will officially sign the contract extension on Friday December 16, providing a major fillip to the underperforming Catalan outfit.
Trailing Real Madrid by six points at the time of writing, the Azulgrana have failed to hit the heights of last season’s title win, but will, at the very least, take some satisfaction from the renewal of one of their star men.
Announced on Thursday afternoon, the improved terms contain scope for an additional year, as well as a buy-out clause of €200m.
A statement on the LaLiga champions’ official site read: “FC Barcelona announce that they have reached an agreement with Luis Suárez for the extension of the player’s contract until 30 June 2021.
“The buy-out clause in the contract is set at €200m.
“The new contract will be signed on Friday 16 December at 1.30pm CET at the Club Offices.”
Speaking at an Adidas event on Thursday, the Uruguayan indicated his pleasure at the new deal, while also speaking in positive terms about the vast potential of the team moving forward.
“It brings me great happiness to be where I want to be,” Suarez said.
“That the club has given me a renewal means that they are happy with my performance and it is a sign of what is still to come.”
Suarez has struck 97 goals in 116 matches for the Blaugrana to date, winning a staggering eight trophies in the process.
He won the prestigious Golden Boot award for the 2015/16 season after netting a Europe-leading 40 goals for Barca in LaLiga.
