Liverpool turned down the chance to sign Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk from Dutch side Groninghen 2013, according to Brendan Rodgers per the Daily Mail.

The defender has been in excellent form for Saints this season and his stock has risen since joining the club from Celtic 18 months ago.

A number of Premier League clubs are said to be looking at signing him this summer, but Rodgers claims he wanted to bring the player to Anfield before he moved to Scotland.

‘When I was at Liverpool I asked about van Dijk and he was at Groningen and then at Celtic. But I was told he wouldn’t be for us at the time,’ Rodgers told the Evening Times.

‘It’s about where the player is at, at the time of their ability.”

Rodgers was sacked by Liverpool in 2015 and replaced by Jurgen Klopp. Last summer, he took over at Celtic, replacing Ronny Deila.
