Wirral-based Mike Dean’s appointment as referee for Monday night’s Merseyside derby has raised eyebrows on both sides of the Liverpool divide, with supporters taking to social media to voice their opinion over the decision.
Some chose to highlight the fact that the controversial official hasn’t been allowed to referee a game for either side in the past 10 years as evidence of a particular bias towards one of the Merseyside clubs, while others pointed to his alleged support of neighbours Tranmere as proof that the appointment was made in good faith.
Here’s the best that Twitter had to offer after the announcement.
Logic, what logic? So says this local journalist…
Dean hasn't refereed either club because of his Merseyside connections (he's from Wirral) in over a decade. So of course he's appointed.— Kristian Walsh (@Kristian_Walsh) December 12, 2016
Another claimed that the initial question-mark over Dean’s impartiality was misplaced…
Good to read that Mike Dean will referee the Merseyside derby next week. Ridiculous that he's been taken off Liverpool and Everton games— Matthew Jones (@mattjones_sport) December 12, 2016
Everton fans weren’t happy though…

The Russians fixed the US election. Mike Dean refs the Merseyside derby. This world is corrupt.— Chris (@chris_efc_rich) December 13, 2016
But Liverpool fans saw the funny side of it all…

@Paddy_Boyland mad innit? Could they not get anyone to travel up or something? Need more Clattenberg for my buck 🙂— Tom (@tmanning24492) December 12, 2016
Mike Dean is the ref for the derby. The Ev will be angry because he didn't give them a throw in against Sunderland in 2007.
