England vs Germany – an old rivalry renewed

England face off against Germany on Saturday evening and whilst this fixture is only of a friendly nature it’s still safe to say that any meeting between these old enemies still garners a great deal of interest.

This battle will also helpfully illustrate just how capable Roy Hodgson’s men are when up against a side of real quality.

England  emerged from their Euro 2016 qualifying campaign with ten wins from ten but many still doubt their ability to mount a genuine push to win their first major honour since 1966.

Germany’s path to this summer’s finals was less straightforward though Joachim Low’s men still finished top of Group D, albeit just a point clear of Poland.

Meetings between these old foes rarely pass without noteworthy incidents, here are five of the most memorable moments in the history of this well worn fixture.

Top five moments

Hurst Goal

1966 and all that!

England’s one and only major tournament win to date did of course come in 1966 and the 4-2 Wembley win is perhaps best remembered for Geoff Hurst’s disputed ‘goal’, the ball did of course cross the line (as the picture above clearly proves).

Paul Gascoigne in tears in 1990

England lose to Germany on penalties and Gazza, having already shed some tears on the field of play after picking up a booking that would have ruled him out of the final, sheds even more tears in a truly iconic moment in footballing history.

England fans celebrate their 5-1 win against against Germany

England’s 5-1 thumping of Germany was quite a feat, even more so when you consider this emphatic win occured on German soil. Even Emile Heskey scored!

Frank Lampard ”Goal’

Half an hour in and England find themselves two goals down in the 2010 knockout encounter with Germany, Matthew Upson pulls a goal back (yes Matthew Upson actually started a key World Cup fixture..) and Frank Lampard fires in a superb equalizer…only he didn’t…because officials present in the stadium failed to spot that the midfielder’s effort had crossed the line…by a mile!

England 2-3 Germany 1970

Four years on from the World Cup win at Wembley and England faced off against Germany again, this time in the sweltering Mexican heat. Sir Alf Ramsey’s men moved into a two goal lead before Franz Beckenbauer, Uwe Seeler and Gerd Muller helped Germany to a famous win in Leon.
