Few would have predicted it, yet in the end many aren’t that surprised.

Disappointed England fans have taken to social media to react, after their side crashed out of Euro 2016 in embarrassing fashion, after a 2-1 defeat to footballing minnows Iceland on Monday night.

With a place in the Quarter-Finals up for grabs, many fans had predicted the game would be a foregone conclusion, and after Wayne Rooney gave Roy Hodgson’s side the lead after four minutes, it looked like the Three Lions were on their way to a comfortable victory in Nice.

But Rooney’s strike turned out to be the only highlight of a disappointing performance, and after Iceland turned the game on its head through Ragnar Sigurdsson and Kolbein Sigthorsson, England could not find a way back into the match, despite playing against a nation with a population of just 330,000.

The post-match inquest and fallout from one of the biggest shocks in European Championship history has already begun, and in the immediate aftermath of the defeat, Roy Hodgson confirmed his resignation as England manager.

There will of course be many fingers pointed at players, staff, and maybe even the FA itself, but it is imperative that the powers that be get the next decision right, in terms of choosing Hodgson’s successor.

Gareth Southgate, Alan Shearer, and Harry Redknapp have all been touted as likely candidates for the position, yet England fans seem in no mood to speculate about the future, with last night’s events still fresh in their memory.

In the aftermath of Monday night’s defeat, some very disgruntled supporters took to Twitter to voice their views.
