Eden Hazard Cruelly Piles On After Thibaut Courtois' Belgium Humiliation

It has been a tough week for Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. After being dropped by Zinedine Zidane in his first game back as Real Madrid boss, he made a horrendous error in his country’s first Euro 2020 qualifier against Russia on Thursday night. To make matters worse, his former Chelsea teammate Eden Hazard trolled him in for it in his post-match interview.

Fortunately for Courtois, the Red Devils went on to get off to a winning start. They may have been missing six key players, including all time top scorer Romelu Lukaku, Kevin De Bruyne and Vincent Kompany. Hazard was in superb form, netting twice and inspiring the team generally. Belgium really showed their strength in depth, with Leicester loanee Youri Tielemans opening the scoring. Hazard’s younger brother Thorgan also played a key role in one of Eden’s goals, while Michy Batshuayi led the line.

It could have all been so different, though. At 1-0 up, Courtois lost control of the ball when put under pressure in his box. He missed the opportunity to clear the ball, before being dispossessed. Denis Cheryshev couldn’t believe his luck, but he still had to finish, which he did expertly. Able to laugh about it at full time, Hazard admitted he thought Courtois had been watching him on YouTube!

“I think he’s looking at too many videos of me, he’s trying to dribble like me!” He quipped to RTBF after the game.

“But it’s not the same thing as he’s a bit taller, it’s a little more complicated. It will spend a little time on the internet and make a buzz!”

Roberto Martinez probably wasn’t laughing at the time, though, and he will be hoping his side can push on and win the group to secure their place in the European Championships. Belgium will be one of the favourites for the tournament again, but the pressure will be on them to deliver.

Their Golden Generation is ageing, and the expectation that they will win a major title will soon dwindle. But their third place finish at the World Cup is certainly something build on.
