Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren believes he should have been considered for the UEFA Defender of the Year, and he certainly didn’t agree with their choice of Sergio Ramos.
After Real Madrid’s victory over the Reds in May’s Champions League final, their players dominated the awards at this year’s group stage draw, with Keylor Navas being voted the best goalkeeper, Luka Modric the best midfielder and Cristiano Ronaldo, who has since left for Juventus, the best forward. Modric also won UEFA’s Player of the Year.
But Lovren certainly took exception with Ramos’ award, claiming he was in with a fair shout.
“From my point of view I had people saying I had a difficult season but I don’t agree with that”, he told beIN Sports.
“I took Liverpool to the final of the Champions League and now with my national team we are in the final. I think people should recognise that I am also one of the best defenders in the world and not just talk nonsense.”
He later took to Instagram to, subtly but savagely, make his feelings known.
Lovren has a job on his hands getting back into the Liverpool team this season, with the team yet to concede with Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez at the heart of the defence.
