Liverpool completed a legendary comeback in the Champions League on Wednesday night, winning 4-0 against Barcelona and progressing to the final 4-3 on aggregate. Divock Origi and Georginio Wijnaldum netted a brace each, as the Reds humiliated the Blaugrana at Anfield, and Dejan Lovren posted his celebrations on social media.

It was a terrible start to the week on Merseyside, with Mohamed Salah being forced to miss the game having picked up a concussion on Saturday’s win at Newcastle. Meanwhile, Manchester City’s late win over Leicester means that winning the Premier League seems unlikely.

There weren’t many people who backed Liverpool coming into this game, especially after Lionel Messi’s incredible brace helped give them a huge lead half time in the tie. Without Salah, and Roberto  Firmino, though, they battled hard.

Origi’s early goal gave them the basis for their sublime performance and result, before Wijnaldum, who came on for the injured Andrew Robertson, scored a quick fire double to level the tie.

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s quick thinking from a corner, which Jürgen Klopp dubbed “genius” led to Origi getting the winner in amazing fashion. Lovren’s post saw him and his teammates celebrating a second successive final, where they will face either Ajax or Tottenham.

As for Barcelona, they have a huge decision to make over manager Ernesto Valverde’s future. Despite winning an eighth league title in 11 years, their spectacular failure in the Champions League two years running has put him in serious risk.

They are will now go at least five years without European success. Even though Messi looks as strong as ever, there are serious doubts over his side’s ability to dominate the footballing world as they once did. From their point of view, it certainly felt like a watershed moment on Wednesday.

Life without Messi is not worth contemplating, but it is on the horizon. Ajax star Frenkie De Jong has already agreed to join the club, but he may well lift the Champions League trophy before arriving at Camp Nou. This game certainly felt like a side at the peak of their powers beating one waving goodbye to theirs.
