Luka Modric says that Cristiano Ronaldo sent him a message to congratulate him on winning the UEFA Best Player award.
The pair were both key members of the Real Madrid squad that won their third consecutive Champions League title in May, and they were up against Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah in the running for the accolade.
But Modric prevailed, after also inspiring Croatia to the World Cup final in the summer. He said Ronaldo, who has since left Real for Juventus, has graciously been in touch.

They are both in contention for the FIFA Best award, too, with the Ballon d’Or also on the horizon. It looks like the duopoly of Ronaldo and Lionel Messi could well be over.
After a summer of speculation linking him with a move to Italian giants Inter, Modric remained at the Santiago Bernabéu, as the club enters a new era under new boss Julen Lopetegui.
