Christmas Crackers: The Hottest 2018 World Cup WAGs in all their glory!

The 2006 World Cup was not a memorable one for England on the pitch. The Three Lions lost on penalties – shock – as the so-called ‘Golden Generation’ failed on the biggest stage once again.

So disappointing was England’s performance that the tournament is remembered as much for the antics of the players’ wives and girlfriends (or WAGs) as for anything positive that happened on the pitch.

Over the years the WAGs have changed but there is still a fascination with the glamorous lives led by footballer’s wives. With the 2018 World Cup just around the corner, we’ve had a look at the WAGs set to turn heads in Russia.

Led by Victoria Beckham, Coleen Rooney and Cheryl Cole, the England WAGs created so many headlines in Germany that they were subsequently banned from attending tournaments by England manager, Fabio Capello.

Russia – Miranda Shelia

Russia went into Euro 2016 hoping to use the tournament as a warm up for the World Cup. The Russian Football Federation have invested a lot of time and money to get the national team competitive for their World Cup but they were dreadful in France.

Back home it wasn’t just the players who came in for criticism from the Russian fans. They turned their anger towards Miranda Shelia, girlfriend of key player Fedor Smolov.

Shelia didn’t seem overly upset by Russia’s failure when she posted a picture of her posing in front of the Eiffel Tower with a very expensive handbag. The controversy didn’t put her off social media for long though to the delight of her fans.

Egypt – Hiba Elawadi

Mohamed Salah’s performances for Egypt have been so impressive that the Liverpool winger was recently named African player of the year. However, he’s not the only Egypt international performing well in the Premier League.

Ahmed Elmohamady has proven to be a dependable player for three different English clubs and is now at Aston Villa. Elmohamady been supported every step of the way by his wife, Hiba Elawadi and she’ll be cheering him on in Russia.

Uruguay – Sofia Balbi

Luis Suárez is no stranger to controversy on the world stage. The Uruguay forward shocked football during the 2010 World Cup when he deliberately saved a goal-bound shot from Ghana. And who could forget when he famously bit into Giorgio Chiellini’s shoulder four years later.

Although most of the footballing world turned against Suárez, he could at least count of the support of his wife, Sofia Balbi.

Balbi has been credited with making Suárez the world class performer that he is today and she’ll hope to be right by his side throughout a successful World Cup campaign in Russia.

Portugal – Georgina Rodríguez

Cristiano Ronaldo finally got his hands on the major international trophy that he’s craved for so long at Euro 2016. Most players would be happy to taste success on the international stage once but Ronaldo has his eyes on spearheading Portugal to a World Cup triumph in the summer.

While Ronaldo will be fully focussed on Portugal’s first match against Spain, his partner, Georgina Rodríguez, will be torn. Although the mother of Ronaldo’s fourth child wants the best for her man, she’s also Spanish and so will wish her fellow countrymen well.

Whoever Rodríguez supports in Russia, she’ll surely win even more fans than she has already (2.8 million people follow her on Instagram) if she makes the trip to the World Cup.

Spain – Shakira

There aren’t too many WAGs heading to Russia who are more famous than their football playing partners. Then again, there aren’t too many people known the world over by just one name.

Shakira, long term partner of Gerard Piqué, is arguably better known around the world than the Barcelona defender. She’s especially popular in the Latin world and Spain where her relationship with Piqué has caused her to lose royalties as Real Madrid banned her songs from the Bernabéu.

Morocco – Cecile Benatia

Mehdi Benatia was signed by Juventus as cover for their defence. The 30-year-old was not expected to play a major part in Juve’s push for the title but he grabbed his chance when it was presented by injuries and became a key part in the Old Lady’s backline.

Benatia was supported throughout his move to Juventus from Bayern Munich by his wife, Cecile. She became a hit with fans while in Germany and has similarly added class and elegance to the players’ lounge in Turin.

Whether in Russia or supporting from a distance, Cecile will be an important factor behind Mehdi Benatia’s performances with Morocco at the World Cup.

Australia – Natalie Jedinak

Australia had to qualify the hard way for the World Cup. It was a case of putting in the air miles, working hard and coping with incredibly challenging atmospheres to book their place in Russia.

There’s no doubt that the Socceroos could not have made it to Russia without incredible teamwork and the support of their families. For Australia captain, Mile Jedinak, that meant leaning on the support of his stunning wife, Natalie.

The two have been together for some years and you can expect Natalie to make the trip to Russia to cheer her man on as the Socceroos look to upset the odds.

Peru – Rosangela Espinoza

While every nation at the World Cup will hope to be cheered on by their own fans, Peru have a very special supporter who is never far from the action. Rosangela Espinoza made headlines around the world for her unique style of supporting the Peru team, growing her own fan base along the way.

Peru’s presence in Russia will be made all the sweeter if Rosangela makes the trip herself. If she does, there’s no doubt a cameraman or two will pick her out from the crowd even if she’s not technically a WAG.

Denmark – Sabrina Kvist Jensen

Denmark football fans have had some top class players to support over the years but when Christian Eriksen’s career is over he may well go down as the country’s best ever footballer.

Eriksen showed just how valuable he is to the Danes with a virtuoso performance against the Republic of Ireland to drag the team to Russia but is there a chance he’ll miss some of the World Cup?

Eriksen recently announced that he and his wife, Sabrina Kvist Jensen are expecting a child. The worry for fans is that the pregnancy will rob Denmark of their best player, while it is sure to mean that Sabrina stays at home.

Argentina – Antonella Roccuzzo

Lionel Messi may be the best footballer of all time in the eyes of many fans but the Barcelona forward is a relatively quiet man away from the pitch.

Messi enjoys spending time with his children and wife, Antonella Roccuzzo and he’ll certainly look forward to some down time during Argentina’s World Cup campaign.

Roccuzzo has become something of a celebrity in Barcelona where she spends time with the WAGs of the club’s other players. Her profile means she’ll be picked up by the cameras in Russia and will win more fans over the course of the summer

Iceland – Alexandra Ivarsdottir

Gylfi Sigurdsson has had an up and down first season at Everton. The Iceland midfielder struggled to find his feet in the early days of his time at the club but at least he had his partner, Alexandra Ivarsdottir to go home to when times were tough.

Alexandra was there to support Gylfi when he was making such a huge impact on Euro 2016 with the rest of his Iceland squad and the support her and her fellow WAGs give in Russia could have a big impact on how the team get on at the World Cup.

Croatia – Vanja Bosnic

With all due respect to Luka Modric, the Croatia and Real Madrid midfielder doesn’t exactly look like a footballer. If you didn’t know what Modric did, you’d be surprised to see him controlling games at the highest level but perhaps you’d have more of a clue about his occupation after seeing his wife.

Vanja Bosnic’s appearances at the Bernabeu have seen her grow a following among Real Madrid fans and she’s set to turn more heads when she supports Modric and the rest of the Croatia team in Russia.

Nigeria – Clarisse Juliette

It takes a special kind of footballer to make the breakthrough from the youth team ranks to a Premier League club’s first team. Alex Iwobi is one of a very select group of players who goes on to forge a career at the top level and he’s gone even further by becoming an important player for Nigeria.

Iwobi is sure to get into the Nigeria squad for the World Cup where he will be cheered on by his model girlfriend, Clarisse Juliette. The stunning Londoner has become a regular fixture at the Emirates and has amassed a significant following on Instagram.

Like many WAGs heading to the World Cup, Clarisse is successful in her own right and she can expect to add to her tally of fans the longer Nigeria remain in the competition

Brazil – Bruna Marquezine

It’s not a bad old life being the most expensive footballer in the world. Neymar has worked his way up from playing football on the streets in Brazil to playing for two of the very biggest clubs in the world.

Neymar is also Brazil’s most important player but while things have gone well for him on the field, he’s had a bit of relationship trouble off of it. The PSG striker has been in an on-and-off relationship with Brazilian actress, Buna Marquezine for some years now.

If the two remain together during the World Cup there is every chance that Bruno will follow Neymar and the rest of the Brazil squad to Russia to cheer the Seleção on.

Switzerland – Leonita Lekaj

When Switzerland were knocked out by Poland on penalties in Euro 2016 the first thing Granit Xhaka did was seek out his girlfriend, Leonita Lekaj for comfort.

It was cleat that the two have a strong relationship then and fans were unsurprised when they tied the knot. The Arsenal midfielder has counted on the support of his wife during his first couple of seasons in English football and he’ll want her by his side at the World Cup.

As well as supporting her husband, the stunning Leonita will also add a touch of class to stadiums around Russia in the summer.

Costa Rica – Angie Alfaro Loria

Although England are always a disappointment at the World Cup, English football is one of the biggest contributors of players to the tournament.

Premier League stars will light up the 2018 World Cup in Russia as well as Championship players like Bryan Oviedo.

The Sunderland midfielder is a highly accomplished player but without his wife, Angie Alfaro Loria, his time in English football may never have taken off.

Angie was a regular fixture at Goodison Park while Oviedo played for Everton and she’ll take her class and beauty with her to Russia.

Serbia – Sofia Milo

Serbia have long been thought of as a dark horse when it comes to competing at major international tournaments. Although they’ve never really proven they can do it on the biggest stages, many football hipsters will be supporting Serbia during the World Cup.

One area in which Serbia are already world class is the supporting cast of WAGs. Take Adem Ljajic’s parner, Sofia Milo for example.

The stunning model is used to turning heads on the catwalk and she’ll be turning heads of football fans in Russia this summer.

Germany – Cathy Fischer

Matts Hummels has long been a rock at the heart of the Germany defence. Throughout his rise to one of Germany’s first choice defenders he’s relied firmly on his own rock, Cathy Fischer.

Fischer and Hummels have been together since 2007 and got marries some years ago. In that time she has become used to the attention and was even named Germany WAG of the year in 2013.

As they say, class is permanent as both Matts Hummels and Cathy Fischer can prove from eye catching appearances at the World Cup.

Mexico – Andrea Duro

West Ham fans learnt just how much Mexico fans love Javier Hernandez when the former Man Utd striker signed for the Irons last summer.

The West Ham social media platforms have been inundated by Mexican fans talking about Chicharito for solidly and the passionate fans have also lent their support to Hernandez’s partner, Andrea Duro.

An accomplished actress in her own right, Duro has had to support Chicharito through a tough opening months at West Ham but she’ll be hoping for happier times at the World Cup.

Sweden – Helena Seger

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is the biggest star Swedish football has ever produced. He hoped to end his international career on a high at Euro 2016 but it was not to be.

However, after making an incredible recovery from a serious knee injury to get back into the Man Utd starting XI some people believe Zlatan will make a triumphant return to his national side at the World Cup.

If Zlatan returns then so will his wife, Helena Seger. Once called the ‘queen bee of WAGs’, Seger is one of the driving forces behind Ibra and would be a very welcome addition to the Russian spectacular in the summer.

South Korea – Han Hye Jin

Although Han Hye Jin and Ki Sung-yueng aren’t quite the Posh and Becks of South Korea, the couple are certainly famous enough at home.

While Ki has struggled to win too much in his spells at Swansea and Sunderland, his wife has won countless awards for her acting.

Han has taken a step away from the limelight after the couple had their first child in September 2015 but she should make the trip to Russia to the delight of her fans from South Korea and further afield.

Belgium – Polly Vermaelen

Thomas Vermaelen picked up a great deal during his time in England with Arsenal. The Belgian defender learnt how to defend in the pressure cooker environment of the Premier League and he also met his wife, lingerie model and presenter, Polly.

The couple are now living together in Barcelona where Thomas plays his football. Due to his continual injury problems, it’s been a tough couple of years for the centre-back but he remain an important player for his country.

If Vermaelen can remain fit, he and Polly will be making the trip to Russia.

An impressive qualification campaign and a couple of solid friendlies and some England fans starting to get excited about the Three Lions’ chances at the World Cup.

Optimists have pointed out the number of quality young players available to Gareth Southgate. Players like Raheem Sterling, Harry Kane and Dele Alli.

With a new generation of England players heading to a World Cup comes a new generation of WAGs and they’ll be headed by Ruby Mae, Dele Alli’s girlfriend. She’s already wowed thousands of football fans through her Instagram account but her popularity is set to skyrocket with all the attention of the World Cup.

Poland – Anna Lewandowska

It came sometimes be hard for partners of footballers to really understand the difficulties that come with being a top level athlete. That’s not a problem that Anna Lewandowska, wife of Poland striker, Robert Lewandowski.

Anna is an athlete as well as something of an entrepreneur so she understands the demands of performing at a high level. She’s also not to be messed with given her training in karate, one of the traits that’s seen her amass 1.5 million Instagram followers.

Colombia – Lorelei Taron

When Radamel Falcao signed for Manchester United the papers ran headlines about his wife, Lorelei Taron, being the wealthiest WAG in the Premier League.

Not only is her husband an incredibly well paid footballer but Argentine Lorelei is a singer with thousands and thousands of fans. The couple were married when Lorelei was just 19 and have clearly fed of each other’s success.
