Spanish source Don Balon claims that Blues midfielder Cesc Fabregas is ‘open’ to a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid…
Fabregas has had a season to forget at Stamford Bridge but even undeniable fact doesn’t make Don Balon’s spurious speculation that the Chelsea man is open to a move to Real Madrid any more believable.
Let’s forget for a moment the 29-year-old’s previous ties to Real Madrid’s arch-rivals Barcelona, and that’s a tough point to ignore, and just concentrate on the reasons as to why Zinedine Zidane would think such an addition would in any way improve on his current central midfield options.
Yes it’s true that Toni Kroos has had an up and down time of it since moving to Real Madrid back in July 2014, however the World Cup winner has certainly improved since Zidane took over from Rafa Benitez. Only a handful of players contributed more La Liga assists than Kroos in 2015/16 and the 26-year-old has been key in his side’s run to the Champions League final.
Then there’s Luka Modric, another firm regular in the Real Madrid, a fan favourite who is going nowhere and as such another prospective cog in the wheel of any potential move to bring Fabregas.
Whilst it’s true Fabregas is still a world-class performer it’s also true that the former Arsenal man’s star is on the wane and as such a move from tenth place Chelsea to Champions League finalists Real Madrid just doesn’t seem a viable deal.
One does wonder whether a Chelsea star or two may look to force a summer transfer given the West London side’s lack of a Champions League berth though the imminent arrival of Antonio Conte at the helm, plus the likely spending of huge sums on new signings, should keep the core of top talents appeased.
