Chelsea look set to sign Real Madrid star: Talks set for January
Chelsea could be set to sign Real Madrid defender Pepe according to the Daily Mirror.
The 33-year-old Portuguese international is locked in contract talks with his Bernabeu employers and is unhappy with how those discussions have panned out and is now ready to call time on his Real Madrid career.
Pepe is out of contract next summer and can therefore begin talks with respective suitors in January and Chelsea are said to be leading the chase.
Antonio Conte has seen his Blues side struggle at the back this term and the injection of an experienced defensive option, especially given John Terry is set to leave Stamford Bridge at the end of the season, could be an intelligent road to take.
Chelsea have kept clean sheets in their past two Premier League clashes, against Hull City and Leicester City, but prior to this Conte’s men had conceded at an alarming rate and their 3-0 defeat at Arsenal would have provided a real reality check for the new boss.
Pepe has struggled with discipline in the past but has matured into a very capable performer and the chance to pick up a player of his quality on a free transfer would prove a massive bonus for Chelsea.
Since moving from FC Porto to the Spanish capital back in 2007 Pepe has made 321 appearances for Real Madrid and has helped the club to two La Liga titles and two Champions League triumphs, among a host of honours, and played a key role in helping Portugal to Euro 2016 success in the summer.
