Chelsea legend backs Jose Mourinho over huge transfer decision
Former Chelsea turned Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has been backed over the decision to sell Kevin De Bruyne.
Mourinho sanctioned the sale of the creative star while in charge at Stamford Bridge, along with that of Romelu Lukaku, and the two have gone on to become stars in the Premier League.
While Mourinho linked up with Lukaku once again, De Bruyne went to Manchester City – and came back to haunt Chelsea when the duo met on Saturday evening, playing a key part in beating Antonio Conte’s men – and Frank Lampard thinks Mourinho made the right decision to sell De Bruyne despite all that.
“I think it was a difficult time for the club because they had (Eden) Hazard, Oscar and Willian had just signed,” he said on BT Sport.
“So you couldn’t play them all. Kevin De Bruyne, his development wasn’t where it is now.
“He was very good at a lot of things in his game, I think now he’s great in his game.
“Of course it’s easy with retrospect with Chelsea and say ‘why did you let him go?’.
“But sometimes players develop at different rates. Kevin has gone away and made himself a world class player in my opinion.
“He had good pace, he had good passing, he had good dribbling skills.
“But at that point he couldn’t get into our team and one thing he had was a lot of ambition.
“You could see he was upset he wasn’t playing and I don’t mind that in a young player. He wanted to go away and prove he was a player.”
