Chelsea handed transfer blow: Brendan Rodgers reveals key Conte target set to stay at Celtic Park despite Blues bidPublished January 30, 2017
Craig Gordon will not be leaving Celtic for Chelsea before Tuesday’s transfer deadline, according to Bhoys manager Brendan Rodgers.
The Scottish international has emerged as a key transfer target for Antonio Conte as the Blues weigh up a £10m offer from Bournemouth for second-choice keeper Asmir Begovic, and has reportedly been the subject of two rejected bids over the past week.
Media sources today suggest that Chelsea’s latest offer of around £3.5m has not been enough to force the Hoops into parting with Gordon.
And with a new contract in the pipeline, Celtic boss Rodgers claimed that the club have no intention of relenting on their stance.
“You know more than me,” Rodgers responded when questioned about a new bid from Chelsea.
“So we want to keep him here. I have no intention of losing him and we look to arrange a new deal with him.”
Celtic face Aberdeen on Wednesday evening but with question marks surrounding Gordon’s participation, Rodgers left reporters in no doubt as to whether the veteran custodian would play against the Dons.
“He will be in the team,” he added.
“I think I made it clear, we’re very strong on what we’re doing here, what we’re trying to build. I repeat – we don’t want to sell him.
“My job here is very simple to look after Celtic, help the club develop on and off the field and part of that is not to give away your best players.”
Should Begovic depart Stamford Bridge over the next 24 hours and a move not come to fruition for Gordon, Chelsea may turn to either AC Milan keeper Diego Lopez- currently on loan at Espanyol- or Galatasaray’s Fernando Muslera.
The Blues play Liverpool at Anfield on Tuesday night in a crunch fixture as far as their title hopes are concerned.
