Chelsea given green-light for £500m project
Major of London Sadiq Khan has given Chelsea the go-ahead to continue with their £500m plans for Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea plan to redevelop their stadium turning it into a state-of-the-art 60,000-seater but it was being held up by third parties objecting to the changes.
After the Chelsea Pitch Owners, who own the playing surface at Stamford Bridge, agreed to extend their lease, it came down to whether or not the Mayor would approve their plans.
Sadiq Khan has given the all-clear.
“I’m confident this new stadium will be a jewel in London’s sporting crown and will attract visitors and football fans from around the world,” Khan is quoted as saying.
A bigger stadium should mean an increase in revenue for the club, especially on match day. Stamford Bridge is currently a 41,000-seater ground so these are significant plans.
They still have some way to grow to have a stadium as big as Old Trafford, mind.
