Chelsea boss makes shocking transfer claim
Antonio Conte has claimed that Chelsea simply cannot compete with the likes of Manchester United and Manchester City in terms of the transfer window.
That’s because he thinks the club do not have as much money as City in terms of what the owner will sanction being spent and do not make the kind of money Manchester United do – with the richest club in the world offering big money salaries – something Chelsea cannot afford to do.
It’s obviously asking for trouble given Chelsea’s big spending past, but Conte claims times have changed and even when he’s asked for players, he’s been denied them and asking does not necessarily get you the star men you want – despite Chelsea set to land Roma duo Emerson Palmieri and Edin Dzeko this week.
It was a dig at the club and board – and also a slight on his players, but Conte was making the same point he made in the summer – and said that Chelsea also need to watch out for clubs like PSG and Real Madrid to boot.
“These two clubs can become seriously dangerous for other teams in the world,” he said. “They are strong already and want to invest. For Alexis Sanchez, only one or two clubs can pay this salary.
CORAL HAVE GOT YOU COVERED
“There are two teams in this league who are top, and they stay there. The others have to fight. It’s not simple to think about finishing above them.
“We were never in this race for Sanchez because of the salary. But we’re not worried. If you work you can fight these big teams.
“Last year we won the league with a little miracle. But situations change. It’s the truth. If you have money you can have the best players. Otherwise you find other ways.
“If you want the best, you spend. Otherwise you go in the middle and spend £20m or £30m.
“If a player earns a lot, it’s because he is the best. It’s the same for the coach. If you never win a trophy, you can say you are the best. But the best win. If you win, ask for more. If you don’t win, don’t ask. You win and can ask, but…”
