The World Cup next summer will be deprived some of the world’s biggest talents — Alexis Sanchez, Gareth Bale and Gianluigi Buffon to name a few — which is a shame but we should still witness a great tournament.
A number of shock exits in this year’s qualifiers meant the likes of USA, Chile and Netherlands have found themselves out of the World Cup, eight months before the 32 teams arrive in Russia.
And, for the first time since 1958, it was confirmed that Italy would not appear in next summer’s competition after a 1-0 aggregate defeat against Sweden during a qualification play-off. What a horrible way for Buffon to hang his boots/gloves.
Since the World Cup draw takes place later today, we decided to select an XI of players that won’t be playing in Russia. Sorry. Not sorry.
Obviously, there are more players that didn’t make the World Cup nor our very own Best XI. Football can be a cruel game at times.
Future Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita and Manchester United’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan would make it into most international teams and are strong alternative options should you disagree with our selection.
The same could be said about Leicester City’s Riyad Mahrez, while in-form Roma striker Edin Dzeko would undoubtedly be a threat at the tournament.
