There is some debate as to whether Liverpool or Bayern Munich have the upper hand after their 0-0 draw in the Champions League last 16 first leg at Anfield on Wednesday night. Bayern will be happy to have kept the Reds’ mighty attack quiet for the evening, and their English Twitter account certainly showed that when it trolled Sadio Mane.
It was a very resolute defensive display from the German champions, who stifled their former rival Jürgen Klopp’s side at every turn throughout the evening. Mats Hummels, who played under Klopp at Borussia Dortmund, and Niklas Süle were incredibly solid at the back, while Joshua Kimmich and David Alaba, usually so effective going forward, held their positions well.
But Liverpool kept Bayern quiet too, and know that any goal scored in the Allianz Arena in three weeks time will por them in a strong position. Given they faced the top scorer in the competition, Robert Lewandowski, without either of their first choice centre backs Virgil van Dijk or Joe Gomez, that has to be seen as a positive.
Chances were few and far between throughout the game, but one did fall to Mane, whose wayward overhead kick caught the eye of Bayern’s English language social media team. They entertained fans with their reaction, claiming they were glad EA Sports had fixed the glitch with overhead kicks on the FIFA gaming franchise.
They even got a reply from EA’s French Twitter team who “you’re welcome”, which left fans in meltdown. Mane will hope to have the last laugh in the second leg in Munich, and he will know how crucial a goal could be for his side at the Allianz Arena.

Overall, it was a miserable night of Champions League action as Barcelona could only muster a scoreless draw in Lyon. But there was more expectation surrounding the game at Anfield because of Liverpool’s attacking quality and ability to play with great intensity on huge European nights.
Attention quickly turns back to the Premier League after a two week break, though, with Liverpool travelling to Manchester United. Victory at Old Trafford could give the Reds the upper hand in the title race once again.
