Bayern Munich are set to complete a huge deal for a defender in the summer, with France World Cup winner Lucas Hernandez set to sign from Atletico Madrid. The German champions are looking to overhaul their ageing squad and this is a major coup to kick off what they will hope can be a seamless transition at the Allianz Arena.

Boss Niko Kovac hasn’t had the easiest of first seasons in Bavaria, having trailed rivals Borussia Dortmund for much of the season in the Bundesliga. He was expected to be sacked earlier in the season, with former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger supposedly sounded out about the possibility of taking over.

Whether Kovac will be in charge beyond the end of the season remains to be seen, but after turning his fortunes around in the new year, he is tasked with retaining the league title and stopping Dortmund winning it for the first time since 2012, as well as progressing past Liverpool in the Champions League.

Despite uncertainty in the dugout, Bayern are pushing on with their rebuild. They have already agreed a deal for Benjamin Pavard, another French World Cup winner; who will arrive from Stuttgart. Pavard played at right-back, but like Hernandez, 23, who has impressed in his career under Diego Simeone at the Wanda Metropolitano, he is a converted centre back. The perspective new boy played at left back for Didier Deschamps in Russia.

Atleti don’t want to lose Hernandez, but it appears Bayern have all but completes the deal after calling in the help of agent Geovanni Branchini according to SportBild. He helped broker deals to bring Italian striker Luca Toni and manager Peo Guardiola to the club in 2008 and 2013 respectively.

Bayern may also need to replace the likes of wingers Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben. It has been no secret that they are keen to sign Chelsea’s teenage sensation Callum Hudson-Odoi. They offered a record £35million for the player, who wants the move, in January, but the Blues hace shunned all interest so far and do not want to sell.
