Manchester United & Real Madrid edge towards £60m player swap deal that could suit all parties
Manchester United and Real Madrid could be nearing a swap deal that would see young forward Anthony Martial and James Rodriguez moving in opposite direction according to reports in The Sun.
French international Martial moved to Old Trafford almost 18 months ago and enjoyed a strong first season at the club but has seen his first team chances limited since the arrival of Jose Mourinho to the club.
Last term the 20-year-old, who cost a fee of £36m (which could rise to around £57m), bagged 17 goals in all competitions to finish as the club’s top-scorer, but has started just five of Manchester United’s opening 13 Premier League fixtures in 2016/17.
Real Madrid are now looking to take advantage of this situation and this source believes Manchester United’s interest in James Rodriguez could lead to a swap deal worth around £60m.
If Martial’s is struggling to make an impact at Man United then James’s efforts are nigh on titanic in comparison, the Colombian being something of a forgotten man under Zinedine Zidane.
The 25-year-old South American has watched on from the sidelines as the likes of Lucas Vazquez and Marco Asensio have pushed ahead of him just for a spot in the queue behind Zidane’s starting eleven, whilst Isco has played a man re-born of late, leaving the former FC Porto and AS Monaco man biding his time.
Rodriguez is too good a player to be sat wasting away on the bench and Jose Mourinho is keen to offer the creative attacking midfielder the chance to re-ignite his career and a move to the Premier League may well tempt the Real Madrid man.
With Wayne Rooney being out of sorts there is perhaps more of a chance for Rodriguez to secure regular first-team football at Manchester United than if he were to remain in the Spanish capital.
When you consider that Real Madrid are still unbeaten you’d have to think Rodriguez looks set for an extended spell kicking his heels and at this point in his career the stylish playmaker can’t afford to waste time.
Interestingly Barcelona are also courting Martial and that could aid a bidding war that could lead to Manchester United preferring to recoup cash from any sale if they deem signing Rodriguez to be a calculated risk too far.
