Axel Witsel Trolls Schalke 04 After Derby Win For Borussia Dortmund
All eyes were on an empty Signal Iduna Park on Saturday afternoon, as two months after the Bundesliga was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, football in Germany returned behind closed doors. It did so with a bang, too. Borussia Dortmund beat rivals Schalke 04 4-0 in the Revierderby to maintain the pressure on Bayern Munich at the top of the table.
Goals from Erling Haaland, his 13th since joining the club from Red Bull Salzburg in January, Thorgan Hazard and Raphael Guerreiro (2), gave Dortmund a comfortable victory. David Wagner, former Huddersfield Town boss who worked at Dortmund under Jürgen Klopp, didn’t enjoy his visit to his former home, and the rivalry between the sides led to some light goading from the Black and Yellows.

Axel Witsel, who missed the game through injury, couldn’t resist a joke at the expense of Schalke, mainly that the scoreline lined up perfectly with their name. Now the club from Gelsenkirchen must return to the drawing board; Dortmund will be hoping they can maintain their push, though Bayern have not yet played this weekend at the time of writing. They travel to Union Berlin on Sunday.
The hope is the Bundesliga will lead the way for other leagues to continue soon. No fans were allowed in the ground, while players were also forbidden from shaking hands and even celebrating together. Everyone will have to get used to a new normal, that’s for sure.
