Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has set his sights on experienced Barcelona defender Jeremy Mathieu according to reports via ESPN.
The Gunners look woefully understaffed at the back as the Premier League seasons gets underway and this has led Wenger to a mad dash to a new addition to boost his ranks.
Valencia’s German international Shkodran Mustafi appears to be his number one target but the La Liga side want as much as £42m for the 24-year-old, which represents the former Everton man’s release clause, a sum the North London side will not fork out for the centre-back.
Now Wenger sees 32-year-old Frenchman Mathieu as an option, presumably a far cheaper one.
Wenger will be without Laurent Koscielny, Gabriel and Per Mertesacker for their curtain raiser against Liverpool on Sunday afternoon and that has left them very light at the back.
Mathieu left Valencia for the Nou Camp in the summer of 2014 and has been a solid, if not spectacular, performer but the arrival of Samuel Umtiti is likely to leave the veteran on the bench for much of the 2016/17 campaign.
