Arsenal have secret plan to land £88m superstar: If the Gunners pull this off they'll be unstoppable up frontPublished October 03, 2017
Arsenal star Alexandre Lacazette is devising a plan to bring his ‘best mate’ Antoine Griezmann to the Emirates Stadium in the near future, with the Atletico Madrid star considering his future now the club can sign players again in January.
Griezmann, 26, was a man in real demand last summer, with an £88million move to Manchester United seemingly close to completion. The France international, also a close friend of United star Paul Pogba, was said to be keen on a move to Old Trafford but the news of Atletico’s transfer ban put the breaks on it because he didn’t want to leave without a replacement being found.
But the ban is lifted this winter, with Diego Costa already set to move. Atletico will not want to lose their prized asset mid-season, but he may well push harder for the exit he originally wanted last summer and the Spanish club will be powerless to stop him.
With United having moved on by signing Romelu Lukaku and giving Zlatan Ibrahimovic new contract, it is hard to see them revisiting their pursuit of Griezmann. That could offer the perfect opportunity for Arsenal to swoop in, using Lacazette as a persuasive tool. The Telegraph is reporting as much.
There is an obvious French connection at Arsenal, not just with Lacazette. Olivier Giroud, Laurent Koscielny and of course boss Arsene Wenger are all fellow countrymen of Griezmann; while he would feel at home, any deal may rest on Arsenal’s ability to afford him and Champions League qualification.
The Gunners broke their transfer record to sign Lacazette for over £50million in the summer, but the fee for Griezmann would likely blow that out of the water.
Two former big money signings look set to leave the Emirates Stadium this summer, with Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil both out of contract. There is no sign of them penning new deals and with both Manchester clubs reportedly circling, it will be vital Arsenal replace them as quickly as possible.
It will be tough to see Arsenal having a free run at Griezmann and Atletico will do all they can to keep him. But Lacazette’s presence will increase their chances of luring him to London. If he signs, maybe it will persuade both Sanchez and Ozil to remain at the club too. There is no doubting how exciting this news could be for Arsenal fans as it would enhance their chances of a first Premier League title in 13 years.
